Student Gets Car for Perfect Attendance

MESA - How important is it to show up to school everyday on time? Turns out it was worth it for one valley teen. It changed his life.

This special key starts the engine of this F-10 Chevy pick up truck.

"It feels really great… its real fun, I'm so like overwhelmed with emotion," says Hector Camacho Jr. The high school junior at East Valley Tech in Mesa won the truck in a school contest.

At the beginning of every year East Valley Tech has a contest and the winner drives away in a car -- and the contest is all about attendance.

Hector made it to school every day, along with 250 other students. There was a drawing, and Hector was one of four who would get a chance to pick the winning key, and he was the lucky one.

"We're learning that hard work pays off, you know you always got to show up, always do your thing, it pays off and it did today."

As Hector checks out his new wheels, his family is very proud of him.

"This is good for him to show that dedication brings good things his way," says his dad Hector Camacho Sr.

Hector was lucky today, but he worked hard to get lucky.

Local car dealer Thoroughbred Chevrolet donates a car or truck every year to the school for the contest. They believe along with the school attendance is important.
