GILBERT - A Gilbert nonprofit group has been struck by an apparent Grinch, after thousands of dollars worth of bells are stolen.
The performance troupe is called Burns It Up and is made up of students. They were performing at a charity event when the bells went missing.
Those handbells are very expensive -- the batch stolen from the group is worth $10,000.
The group performed Dec. 11 at Freestone Park in Gilbert at the County Animal Care and Control fundraiser.
In the chaos, the group's leader left a box full of pricey bells unattended for a few minutes, and someone swiped them.
"We canvassed the park and they weren't there. And then I contacted every single person that I could contact and nobody could find them," says Karen Burns, who leads the nonprofit performance group.
The kids act, sing, and dance in the name of charity, and this year was their first using the bells -- which were borrowed.
Burns contacted the police, but there are no leads so far. The group was planning to perform with the bells many more times.
"I am hoping we can recover from this, that everyone isn't so disheartened that it just disbands."
The group's leader is asking anyone who was at the event to report anything suspicious.
