A family is grieving after the apparent random murder of a 48-year-old woman, shot to death in a south Phoenix K-Mart parking lot on Monday night.
Police say Luz Estella Navarro had left the K-Mart on 3rd St. and Baseline on Monday and got into her silver SUV when she was shot at point-blank.
Police say the shooting suspects were lying in wait in the parking lot until they chose a victim. The motive for the shooting is unclear, but it's possible robbery was their intent.
Navarro, who went by Estella, worked at several valley churchs and was regarded as an integral part of her South Mountain community.
Navarro is survived by a 20-year-old daughter and 16-year-old son. She and her husband would've celebrated their 24th anniversary next year.
Police say Navarro's family was watching the television news and saw the story break. They recognized their truck.
"If you see somebody suspicious, which means, somebody you don't know hanging around, loitering around, hanging around your vehicle, turn around and go back into the store, have somebody escort you out, or call 911," says Phoenix Police Sgt. Andy Hill.
Police think more than one person was involved in the shooting. A black man in his late 20s wearing a black hoodie was spotted running from the scene.
