Fundraiser Held for Mom Killed in Smoke Shop Shooting

Teen Shooting Suspect in 4th Avenue Jail

Published : Saturday, 21 Jan 2012, 10:58 PM MST

PEORIA, Ariz. - A 15-year-old boy spends his first night in the valley -- since police say he shot three people at a smoke shop -- killing two of them.

Officers brought Tyson Langley back to Peoria Friday night from Los Angeles.

They said the young murder suspect fled the state on Tuesday -- after the deadly rampage.

Langley has been booked into the 4th Avenue Jail. He's being held in a separate unit for juveniles and made his initial court appearance Saturday. Meanwhile, loved ones of his victims say the pain they feel is just unbearable.

Just seconds into this interview, she breaks down -- 16-year-old Kalla Hester was too emotional to talk about Melinda Bowen -- the only mom she's ever known.

Her dad, Demont Hester, was there to comfort her, but he doesn't know how to explain why she's now gone.

Their family held a car wash in Peoria on Saturday to raise money for her funeral costs.

Hester said he feels numb.

“Just been in a cloud, pretty much,” he said.

He said knowing that the teen accused of killing her is now in custody brings little comfort.

On Friday night, 15-year-old Langley said nothing as he was led into the Peoria Police Department.

“I just want to see him one time, just look at him. I don’t have nothing to say to him -- just look at him, just let him know he affected a lot of people,” Hester said while crying.

Kenneth Matlock, 60, was also killed at a Peoria smoke shop Tuesday. The store remains closed, though a memorial honoring both victims continues to grow each day.

Court documents detail some of the horror that police said went on in the shop.

They said Bowen just happened to walk in as Langley was robbing the place, and she didn't understand the owner's warning that he was armed.

A third victim wounded by gunfire actually hid in some bushes as Langley tried to chase him down.

Police said the Sandra Day O'Connor High School student didn't get away with much more than $300.

A sign remains posted outside his family’s home. It says, “We are devastated by this tragedy -- for the victims, their families and friends. At this time we have no comment.”

Police said it’s still unclear what prompted Langley to rob that store in the first place. He is not talking to investigators.

He faces first-degree murder charges and will be tried as an adult. Peoria police said they will be meeting with the county attorney's office to discuss the case Monday.
