Police are looking for a pedophile letter-writer who has been targeting young girls for at least 10 years.

The suspect is writing sexually-explicit letters to girls in the valley between the ages of 8 and 14 years old.

He knows their names and he knows what they look like, because he's choosing young girls who have been pictured in local newspapers.

Police say he's written around 80 letters since 1999 to girls around in Arizona and several other states, including New York, New Jersey, Florida, California, Georgia, and Texas. The first reported letter went to a 12-year-old girl who lived in Tucson.

A couple who lives in the east valley says their 8-year-old daughter received a letter from this suspect last fall. They say letter frightened them, and made them change the way they live and focus on security.

"The letter was downright threatening. Someone says they want to do certain things to your child and they're very graphic, the kind of language he used. Husbands and wives don't talk like that usually," says an Arizona couple who doesn't want to be identified. "It used to be fun to go check the mail with the kids. Now I check the mail, I carry the mail, they aren't allowed to go through anything."

The girls who have received letters have lived in Phoenix, Tempe, Chandler, Mesa, Paradise Valley, Gilbert and Chandler. The most recent letter went to a little girl in Scottsdale this past July.

A Phoenix postmark is what all of these letters have in common.

The letter-writer has never engaged in any physical contact with any of the victims, so there isn't a suspect description available.

Authorities are offering a $1,000 reward in identifying the suspect. The following are two of his frequently-used phrases: "lovebud" and "hope her thighs feel as good as they look." If you have any information, please contact Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
