Crime Alert: Catalytic Converter Theft

Published : Tuesday, 30 Jun 2009, 8:11 PM MST

TEMPE, Ariz. - Catalytic converter theft is on the rise in the East Valley. Thieves are stealing catalytic converters found under your car.

Tempe police say it’s a growing problem.

"Just like your copper thefts, when you see the price rise, then you're going to see also a rise in the crime," says Officer Andy Rodriguez of the Tempe Police Department. There's been 13 incidents in the past month.

Crooks are ripping off the car part and making money on the precious metal, platinum. Thieves can make anywhere from $100 to $300 -- but it takes as much as $1,000 to replace.

"It's ridiculous to see the lengths that thieves will go to to make a buck," says Glen Haywood, of Good Works Auto Repair.

Trucks and SUVs are the most common vehicles targeted, because there is more room to get under the car to retrieve it.
