BULLHEAD CITY, Ariz. - The parents of a newborn baby boy have been arrested, accused of assaulting and sexually abusing him.
The 1-month-old baby was taken to the emergency room on June 15 with life-threatening injuries. Bullhead City Police officers noticed the baby had bruises and sores all over his body and his eyes were red and swollen shut.
Doctors told police that the baby had broken ribs, a broken femur, was malnourished, dehydrated and showed signs of sexual abuse and shaken baby syndrome.
The boy died from his injuries on June 16.
The boy's mother, 19-year-old Staci Lynn Barbosa, was arrested when she took the baby to emergency care. Her boyfriend and the baby's father, 23-year-old Jonathan Edward Vandergriff, turned himself into police.
Police served a search warrant on their shared home and found marijuana and other evidence.
Vandergriff and Barbosa were arrested for molestation of a child, child abuse, aggravated assault and sexual conduct with a minor. More charges, including homicide, are pending.
Vandergriff is being held on a $500,000 bond at the Mohave County Jail in Kingman. Barbosa is being held on a $250,000 bond.
