PHOENIX - An 8-year-old valley boy is preparing to fly across the country to raise money for kids who have a parent serving in the military overseas.
Chandler Negrete will fly via Cessna 172.
Negrete has had 12 hours in a flight simulator and another 12 hours in an actual plane, but the third-grader isn't allowed to fly by himself because pilots cannot get licenses until they are 17.
Sawyer Aviation Pilot Matt Forsey will be traveling by his side. The two are flying from Arizona to New York to raise money for the military veterans and their children.
They hope to raise $80- to $100,000 for ourmilitarykids.org , an organization that gives grants to children for sports, fine arts and tutoring while their parents are deployed or if their parents are injured vets.
Before the flight, Chandler needs to collect $15,000 in donations to cover the cost of the flight.
The date for the flight has not been set yet.
