A Surprise man has won a $3.1 million jackpot while playing the lottery on his 50th birthday.
Dwight and Janeese Cook live in Surprise. Dwight works for Home Depot, Janeese works at Red Robin, and just three weeks ago they made playing the Pick 5 Lotto a ritual -- and it's already paid off.
The win is bittersweet. Dwight lost his father to congestive heart failure in the same week as his big win.
"Very bittersweet, big highs and big lows. My dad was a rock, he was an old steel worker, and he wanted to make sure Mom was taken care of and now he knows," says Dwight.
The money will go to taking care of Dwight's mother and opening a no-kill animal shelter, something Janeese has always wanted to do.
"We've always been passionate about trying to save animals, dogs."
The couple decided to take the lump sum, and they say they plan to keep on playing. The Cooks bought the ticket at a Chevron gas station in Surprise.
