Some Companies Say No to Resumes, Yes to Social Media

PHOENIX - Some companies are looking for new employees, but they're not reading over resumes anymore.

Instead, employers are using online social media profiles, such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to get a better understanding of who their job candidate is.

Jobing.com's Theresa Maher says when you work for a company, you are an extension of their brand. With technology playing such a major role in how we all stay connected, it's easy to learn a lot about a person - especially through social media. It should be no surprise that some companies look at a candidate's social media pages to get a better feel for who they are.

  • Photos How are you portrayed? This gives the employer an idea of what you feel is appropriate and what isn't. If you are scantily clad or partaking in unprofessional behavior, the employer may be concerned about how you will act in their professional setting.

  • Posts: What are you interested in? This gives employers a look into who you are. What do you like, what don't you like? Are they written in correct grammar, etc. This is a peek into your personality.

  • Comments: Are you always negative? Is there a lot of profanity in your comments? Are you putting people down? Comments on other people's posts can show how you view differing opinions

  • A High-Level View: Most employers are not going to spend a lot of time on your social media pages (unless you are applying for a SM position). They likely find them by doing a Google search of your name. They are looking at how you portray your image overall, not every word you say.
