Holiday Tipping Guide

Everyone appreciates a little something extra during the holiday season.  From your hair dresser to the mail man, we're taking a look at tipping etiquette.

One week to one month:

  • Pay as a cash tip, plus a gift from you
  • Live in nanny, butler, cook, housekeeper
  • Personal care giver - between one week and one month's salary or a gift


One week pay:

  • Au pair or daily sitter - plus a small gift from the child.
  • Dog walker
  • House keeper/cleaner and or small gift


Other cash tips:

  • Beauty salon staff - cash or gift depending wheather you tip well after each service
  • Barber - cash or gift - cost of one haircut or gift
  • Pesonal trainer - cash or gift - up to cost of one session or gift
  • Pet groomer - cash or gift - up tp cost of one session or gift
  • Massage therapist - cash or gift - up tp the cost of one sesion
  • Pool cleaner - cash or gift - the cost of one cleaning to be split among crew
  • Garage attendants - cash or gift - $10 to $30 or a small gift
  • Newspaper delivery person - cash or gift -$10 to $30 or small gift
  • Mail carrier - small gift only
  • Package deliverer - only if you receive regualar deliveries - small gift in the $20 range - check company first
  • Superintendant - cash or gift - $20 to $80 or a gift
  • Doorman - cash or gift - $15 to $80 or more fo each multiple doormen or a gift
  • Babysitter - one day or evening's pay, plus a small gift from your child
  • Caddies - a regular caddy - normal fee is one round. The pool caddy tip: $50.00 to $100.00 for the season
  • Lifeguard or pool attendant $20 to $50 if permited
  • Camp counselors - small gift from you child
  • Regular tennis or golf pro - The cost of one private lesson
  • Sailing dock attendant - $20 to $50


General tipping:

  • Restaurants (sit down) 25 - 20%
  • Wait service - buffet - 10%


No obligation:

  • Host $10 to $20 on occasion, if you are a regular patron
  • Take-Out:  0-10% if person went above normal service
  • Barender - $1 per drink or 15 - 20% of the tab
  • Tipping jars - tip occasionally if you are a regular or the person went above normal service
  • Rest room attendant $0.50 - $3, depending on service
  • Valet - $2 to $5


Travel:

  • Skycap - $2 first bag, $1 per additional bag
  • Doorman $1 - $2.00 for carring luggage
    • $1 - $2 for hailing a cab
    • $1 - $4 beyond the call of duty
  • Bellhop $2 first bag, $1 per additional bag
  • Housekeeper $2 to $5 per day, left daily
  • Concierge - $5 for tickets or reservations, $10 if hard to get, no need to tip for answering questions


Salon/spa:

  • Hairdresser 15 - 20%
  • Manicurist 15 - 20%
  • Facial/waxing 15 - 20%
