FORT MCDOWELL, Ariz. - Her name is Scarlet and she's been through a lot. Abandoned in the desert, she had just given birth, and her babies were likely taken by coyotes.
When someone found her she was extremely sick. But now thanks to the Animals Benefit Club, Scarlet has a second chance.
"She's a very sweet dog and she's a dog that just deserves a chance," says Andra Jeffress with ABC.
When the Animals Benefit Club rescued her she was suffering from valley fever and tic fever.
"Horrible condition, she was covered with fleas. She was not feeling well, not really eating well."
"She has kind of a double whammy in that she's dealing with both these diseases, they're very severe," says veterinarian Charles Pullen.
"The valley fever is very severe and has inhibited her ability to stand or walk easily because she has two very bad bone lesions," says Jeffress. "Its going to be a long haul she's going to have to have the rest of these treatments and she's going to have to have medications."
But the medications don't come cheap.
"There's considerable expense with the hospitalization and so forth you can end up with a case like this costing thousands of dollars," says Pullen.
The push is now on for donations to save Scarlet's life, so one day she can be put up for adoption and finally get the home she deserved.
"I'd love to be able to see her feel well and go to a lovely forever home where she gets to sleep on the kids bed somewhere," says Jeffress.
Scarlet's treatment is expected to cost between $5,000 to $6,000.
