PHOENIX - This teenage girl has a peanut allergy, and that's why her parents are having trouble understanding why she would intentionally eat "Crunchy Nut" cereal that clearly has peanuts.
They want police to figure out exactly what happened to their daughter.
More than 3 months after suffering a serious peanut allergy attack, 14-year-old Adrianna Aguirre is going through rehab at a skilled nursing facility in south Phoenix, with her parents by her side every day.
"She is making progress and it is slow but she has opened her eyes all the way now and she has mentioned some words," says father Edward Aguirre. "The brain activity is coming but it's ever so slow."
Edward Aguirre says his daughter suffered brain damage because of a lack of oxygen.
Her airway closed after she ate some crunchy nut cereal. Adrianna has a peanut allergy.
Her dad says she's careful about everything she eats.
"It's frustrating because we don't know what happened to throw her into this shock to the degree she is into," he says.
Aguirre says his daughter was over at a friend's house when she went into allergic shock, and now he says police are looking into what happened.
"We just want answers, that's all we want, and at this point they said that's what were looking for."
Adrianna is experiencing post-traumatic amnesia and cannot yet explain what happened to her.
Phoenix Police cannot confirm whether or not they are looking into the possibility of foul play in this case.
