PHOENIX - A Phoenix pediatrician accused of distributing child pornography on his personal computer headed to federal court Friday.
Emilio Luna, who worked as a pediatrician at Desert Valley Pediatrics, resigned Thursday from the practice and gave up his medical license.
In his initial court appearance, Luna wore shackles and an orange jump suit.
The judge agreed to release him from custody until his trial begins -- but he'll be on house arrest and be forced to wear an electronic monitoring device.
As terms of his release, Luna is forbidden to be around children or use the internet.
Luna allegedly distributed child pornography at the same time he was working at a pediatric clinic in west Phoenix. Authorities learned that thousands of images of underage boys were shared from his home computer in a public file-sharing system.
If convicted, Luna faces 20 years behind bars.
The clinic released the following statement Friday: "Obviously, as pediatricians we are disgusted by the allegations, which are against every belief that we as pediatricians hold dear. Doctor Luna became an employee of our practice only very recently, in January of this year. In the short time he was employed here, there were no indications of any unusual behavior."
